This modification changes the vertical category include so that only subcategories of a particular group are shown, allowing you the freedom to 'group' categories in your menu.
What this does is take a category which has subcategories under it and lists ONLY the subcategories so you're able to then list those subcategories in a "grouped" area separated from the rest of the navigation menu.
